Katie was disgusted by the smell of smoke but her friends smoked. At age 17 she reasoned that maybe if she smoked too that the smells wouldn't bother her as much.
No one warned her that she'd quickly become addicted to smoking nicotine and would be forced to live with the smells even when her friends were not around. It took smoking about 20 cigarettes (one pack) before Katie noticed that she'd lost her freedom and ability to simply turn and walk away. She has tried quitting twice and failed.
